Zhou Xuan 周璇 (1918? 1920?-1957), began her film acting career as a teenager and became one of the most beloved singers of the Chinese silver screen. Her breakout role as the songstress Xiao Hong in Yuan Muzhi’s Street Angels (1937) boosted her reputation as a “golden voice,” a star of both cinema and the Mandarin recording industries. She went on to star in many other musicals, including Romance of the West Chamber (1940), Meng Lijun (1940), Dream of the Red Chamber (1944), and the politically-controversial Sorrows of the Forbidden City (1949). Her two hit songs from Street Angels, below, are ”Song of the Four Seasons” and ”Songstress at the Ends of the Earth”, which appears twice in the film.
